Sahm al-Imam(سهم الإمام)

Half of the Khums payment designated for the Imam's share, typically paid to a Marja' (religious authority) or their representative.

Sahm al-Imam (the Imam's Share) constitutes half of the total Khums payment. In Ja'fari jurisprudence, this portion is attributed to the rightful Imam. During the occultation of the Twelfth Imam, scholars differ on its exact disposition, but the predominant practice is to pay it to a qualified Marja' (a grand Ayatollah qualified for emulation) or their authorized representative.

The Marja' typically uses the Sahm al-Imam funds for various community needs: supporting Islamic education institutions (hawzas), funding scholarly research, aiding community development projects, and supporting the propagation of Islamic knowledge. The specific use depends on the Marja's assessment of community priorities.

Many followers consult their Marja' for permission regarding the use of their Sahm al-Imam, as there may be specific guidance on whether it can be directed to certain charitable causes or community institutions. This reflects the trust-based relationship between a follower and their chosen Marja' in Ja'fari practice.
