Sadaqah is voluntary charity in Islam, distinct from the obligatory Zakat. While Zakat has specific thresholds, rates, and eligible recipients, Sadaqah can be given in any amount, at any time, to anyone in need. The term encompasses all forms of generosity — financial and otherwise.
In Islamic tradition, Sadaqah is not limited to monetary giving. A kind word, removing an obstacle from a path, or sharing knowledge are all considered forms of Sadaqah. However, in the context of Islamic finance, Sadaqah typically refers to voluntary financial contributions given to benefit others.
Some forms of Sadaqah have specific names. Sadaqah Jariyah refers to ongoing charity — such as building a well or funding education — whose rewards continue as long as people benefit from it. Waqf (endowment) is a related concept where assets are dedicated to charitable purposes in perpetuity.
